Good to know: Most ships dock at Halong International Cruise Port in Bai Chay; some use nearby Cai Lan Port instead. Both sit roughly 165 - 170 km from Hanoi, and we confirm your ship's specific docking arrangement before finalizing timing.
Both Halong International Cruise Port and Cai Lan Port are modern, well-run terminals with customs, immigration and taxi stands right outside. That part is easy. The part that actually matters is what comes next: a 2.5 to 3-hour drive each way, which leaves almost no margin for a late start or a confused pickup.
Your guide and vehicle are positioned at the terminal exit before you clear customs. Your Hanoi shore excursions begin the moment you're ready, without waiting for a shared shuttle to fill up.

HAnoi · Destination Guide
For cruise travelers docking at Halong Bay, a journey into the heart of Vietnam’s capital is an unforgettable experience. Just a few hours away, Hanoi shore excursions offer a fascinating blend of history, culture, and local life.
One of the most exhilarating moments on any Hanoi city shore tour is witnessing a train speed through the famously narrow Hanoi Train Street. Nestled between rows of homes and tiny cafés, this live railway runs just inches from doorsteps, making it a thrilling and visually striking stop. Locals casually sip coffee and go about their day as the train passes by within arm’s reach.
During your Hanoi shore tours from Halong Bay, you can enjoy a traditional egg coffee from one of the charming cafés lining the tracks, while marveling at how harmoniously urban life coexists with such powerful infrastructure. It’s a one-of-a-kind cultural moment that defines the unexpected magic of Hanoi cruise excursions.
For those seeking a peaceful and historically rich experience, the Temple of Literature is an unmissable destination on any Hanoi shore excursion. Built in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius, this site once served as Vietnam’s first national university. Its courtyards, altars, and ancient stone steles tell the story of centuries of learning and scholarship.
This serene stop provides a striking contrast to the bustling city streets, making it ideal for travelers looking to reflect and unwind during their Hanoi shore excursions.
Known internationally as the “Hanoi Hilton”, the Hoa Lo Prison Museum offers a sobering glimpse into the city’s turbulent 20th-century history. Once used by French colonists to detain Vietnamese revolutionaries, and later by the North Vietnamese army to hold American POWs, the museum is a powerful stop on any Hanoi shore excursion.
The exhibitions present a complex narrative of conflict, resistance, and survival, making this visit an important part of understanding Vietnam’s past.
According to legend, a magical turtle returned a sacred sword to the lake, giving it its name: “Lake of the Returned Sword”. Today, it’s a favorite gathering place for locals and visitors alike. On your Hanoi shore tours, you can cross the iconic red bridge to Ngoc Son Temple, watch morning tai chi sessions, or simply enjoy the calm amid the city’s buzz.
The beating heart of the city, the Hanoi Old Quarter is a labyrinth of 36 streets, each historically named after the trades that once flourished there. It’s one of the top-rated experiences on Hanoi shore excursions, offering travelers the chance to dive into the energy, flavors, and colors of the city.
A deeply revered site in the Vietnamese capital, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is a solemn yet essential part of any Hanoi shore excursions. Here lies the preserved body of Ho Chi Minh, the father of modern Vietnam, whose legacy continues to shape the country’s identity.
Situated on the banks of the Red River, Bat Trang Ceramic Village is a hidden gem often included in more immersive Hanoi shore excursions from Halong Bay. With a history stretching back 700 years, this village is famous for its high-quality pottery and hands-on experiences.
Delve into the rich tapestry of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, a fascinating highlight on many Hanoi shore excursions. Through detailed exhibits, reconstructed tribal houses, and traditional costumes, the museum provides deeper cultural context for Vietnam’s diversity.
The Soul of Northern Cuisine
One of the highlights of joining Hanoi shore excursions is getting to experience the city’s world-famous cuisine. Known as the heart of Vietnamese culinary culture, Hanoi offers an incredible mix of traditional flavors, street food, and family-style dishes that reflect its rich history and lifestyle.
A steaming bowl of pho is the perfect beginning to your Hanoi shore excursions, where flavor and tradition meet in every spoonful. The broth, simmered for hours with star anise, cinnamon, charred onion, and roasted ginger, releases an aroma so inviting it feels like a warm welcome from the city itself. Tender slices of beef or chicken float among soft rice noodles, creating a delicate balance of richness and freshness that soothes the soul.
A crisp, golden baguette cradles layers of grilled meats, pate, pickled vegetables, and herbs that burst with contrast and character. It’s fast, flavorful, and deeply satisfying, making it the perfect bite between sightseeing stops on your Hanoi shore excursion. As you stroll through the Old Quarter, the crunch of the baguette and the explosion of flavors tell a story of Hanoi’s colonial past meeting its creative present.
Golden and fragrant, nem ran (Hanoi-style fried spring rolls) embody the joy of Vietnamese comfort food. Each delicate wrapper is stuffed with minced pork, glass noodles, wood ear mushrooms, and fragrant herbs, then fried to perfection until light and crisp. The first bite delivers a satisfying crunch that gives way to layers of savory warmth.
Fresh pork is marinated with garlic, fish sauce, and sugar before being grilled over hot charcoal, filling the air with irresistible fragrance. The sizzling patties are served alongside vermicelli noodles, a basket of herbs, and a bowl of tangy-sweet dipping sauce that ties every flavor together in harmony.
This signature Hanoi beverage blends strong, aromatic coffee with a layer of whipped egg yolk and condensed milk, creating a creamy foam that’s both rich and silky. The contrast between the bitter coffee and the sweet, custard-like topping is pure harmony in a cup.
